Great wines are grown in the vineyard.

Bob and Marsha Lang produce Zinfandel, Syrah, Barbera and Sauvignon Blanc from personally selected family-owned Sierra Foothill vineyards in Amador County.  Known for deep, granite-based soils, California's oldest Zinfandel vines are grown here in these picturesque gold-country valleys.

Amador's vineyards lie at elevations above 1200 feet & produce robust and spicy Zinfandels whose characteristics define this unique California varietal. The Langs emphasize the vineyard's unique contribution to wine quality.

Until 1999, the Langs produced Zinfandel exclusively from their own foothill vineyards on Twin Rivers Ranch. In partnership with two other airline pilots they had known as sailors in Sausalito, Bob and Marsha Lang acquired the Twin Rivers property in 1972. Vines were planted in 1974, primarily as a means to carry the mortgage on the 1600-acre ranch. An airstrip within the vineyards enabled them to fly from the Bay area to the vineyard in 35 minutes. A drought in 1976/77 required drilling wells for irrigation; the pumps were powered by a generator until electric lines were brought in from 3 miles away. Sale of those grapes and the wines they produced met with great success; by 1981 the vineyards had grown to 200-acres. Lang Wines began as a marketing technique to demonstrate the quality of their grapes to assist in grape sales to wineries across the state. Their first wine won a gold medal at the 1986 Orange County Fair.

For many years the Langs produced only a few hundred cases from each vintage. However, gold medals at the Orange County, Los Angeles, Amador, El Dorado and California fairs, together with over 40 other medals of gold, silver & bronze, attest to the excellent qualities of Sierra Foothill vineyards.

In June 2007, the Lang 2005 Amador County Zinfandel, with beautiful grapes from Vicki Delpart‚Äôs 38-acre Oakmont Vineyards, was awarded a Double-Gold medal at the Amador County Fair & another Gold Medal at the San Francisco International Wine Competition. The 2006 Amador Zinfandel repeated that success by winning a gold medal at the 2008 Amador County Fair and additional medals at the San Francisco Int'l Wine Competition and the Orange County Fair. The 2007 Zinfandel is again a gold medal winner, this time at the 2009 Orange County Fair.

Production now tops 1800 cases each year; the Langs intend to continue their twenty six-year history of producing small quantities of Amador Zinfandel, Syrah and Barbera from the best vineyards in California‚Äôs finest Zinfandel region. Winemaker Mark McKenna and the Langs visit these select vineyards often from winter pruning to bud-break in the spring and especially to determine the exact day to harvest in the fall.

The consistent quality of Lang Wines results from a continuing cultivated harmony of cooperation between small, but exceptional wine-growers in Amador County and the Sierra-foothills and our winemaker, Mark McKenna . Enjoy!
